I have two sons — one who stopped going to college classes — and another in high school who stopped turning in certain assignments who cannot stop playing World of Warcraft. How do I get them to see that WOW is a waste of their time and damaging their future?

Give them porn. Lots and lots of porn. I would say he needs a female, but then I laughed myself into hysteria and bumped my head on the desk. Now i have a bruise because of your sons. Gee thanks!

How about you ground them? I mean, after all you are their dad. You have authority, use it dammit.

Other solutions are to uninstall the program and take away the CD, and take them with you to social events or get them to have a party or something; Just something to get them back in touch with the “real world”

Video games usually don’t hurt you except if played in excess.
This seems to be the case, so tell his teachers not to let him play it in his free time and disconnect his connection to the game.

I agree with everyne except the first one…

Buy him porn, he needs a chick
Xbox 360 will get him off WOW, its a stupid game, I admit, but notice, many parents think that videogames are a waste of time, so I guess you are between 40 and 55…40 and under know that videogames are not a waste of time, and take some notes because children learn more in videogames then in real life, yup, school teachs you how to count and read and crap like that, just basics, while videogames develop your strategy and your imagination…

If Zelda wouldve never existed I wouldnt probably be stupider, because believe it or not, that game has influenced me a lot…
And not because I play videogames it means I am a flaming nerd with glasses that knows everything.
I am indeed very smart, and I am also a model, (unlike these other chicks that I work with…Jesus are they dumb? Is Italy in europe or europe in Italy? I just wanted to shoot her freaking head)

Get him an xbox 360 and take world of warcraft out. WOW is indeed very addictive, but Xbox 360 addicts you in a good kind of way. That you just need a daily dosis to be okay.

You’ve got to be freaking kidding me.
Come on you are the owner. You are a parent.
I’d say to delete the game and creamate the game. And if they buy it again, who gives a CRAP?! do the same thing until they get tired of it.
It may sound retarded but you want help right?
    THEN TRY!

    Thank you for your time.

that’s quite simple, erase the program and block the site has the download, if that doesnt work, lock your computer with a password if they dont need it.

Other than simply taking the game away, you could put limitations on the play-time. Only allow him an hour a night during the week, or give the stipulation that he doesn’t play until all of the nights’ assignments are completed.

WoW is like another life to them with their own friends and things to do all on the World of warcraft. Its called WORLD of warcraft for a reason. you might not be able to get them off of it unless u take it away long enough so they dont obsess over it. that might be a long time…. maybe 6 months. but if u take it away for that long they will find something else to do and probably forget about it.

If you pay for the game, stop.

Here is a yahoo group that might be able to help ya:

First of all the game is not a waste of time. Put your foot down and act like a parent and set allowed times that they can play or do not let them play unless their homework is done. You could always just stop paying for it and cancel their subscriptions. It is not always just the games fault and parents really need to stop blaming everything on them. Your the parent it is our responsibility to act like it and stop taking the easy way out by blaming video games!!!

you can’t do anything about the kid in college, really, because he is an adult, but for the other one, i suggest demanding his user name and password, then you can either put parental controls on there with your own password so he can only play for a few hours a day, or you can take the credit card off the payment plan so they will no longer be perscribed. either way, your kid will hate you.

Well, first of all let me say bravo to all the intelligent answers to this parent’s question. You make the World of Warcraft community seem like complete jerks, so hats off to you.

In case you were tired of wading through all the smart-alecks, here are your options:

There is a Parental Control option that will allow you to limit your sons’ playing time, down to 30 minute intervals. You would need to know the log-in name and password for their accounts.

You can uninstall the game from the computer

You can stop paying for the World of Warcraft accounts if you have been doing so

You can remove internet access from the computer

I would like to say that you can sit your sons down and explain to them that these things are best taken in moderation and that they will understand and suddenly start cranking out top grades and become assets to society. Unfortunately I have seen what happens to the younger members of my guild when their parents limit or take away their World of Warcraft access and it isn’t pretty.

I would suggest that you not start this conversation by insulting something that they obviously enjoy. There is no quicker way to alienate someone and get them on the defensive than tell them that an activity that they like is a waste of time.

    Good luck.

First of all you cannot have away too get rid of the game. Even if you threw there cd’s out you can download. And it is most definately not a waste of time you stupid old people who think it ruins your life. Actually I am 10 years old. Doesn’t seem like it does it? That’s because I learned alot of stuff from WoW and I still do. It gives me something fun too do after school because if you think school is fun I despise you really. Anyway back to what I was saying. Even if you throw out there copies and everything they will still have a way too get in. Even if you put a password on the computer they will either find a way to bypass it or play at a friends. Just let them play it’s there choice. That’s like saying having a math addict quit doing math. You can’t because you do it in you’re daily life. Well you can’t stop us WoW players we will always have a way too get online even though I have my own computer it doesn’t matter but still. And the fact you say it’s going to damage there future…That’s not true. Stop being a stupid psychologist wannabe and cry more nub. Leave the WoW community alone.
